Ran into an interesting situation recently that I thought was worth sharing here.
A relative of mine was trying to get a copy of their land records for a property that's technically within a town limit now, even though the area used to be considered village land years ago. They kept searching for a Patta Chitta and couldn't find anything matching — turns out the property had been reclassified under the town survey system at some point, which means the actual document they needed was a TSLR extract, not a Patta Chitta at all.
This seems to be a fairly common mix-up, especially in areas that have grown from villages into towns over the past couple of decades. The two systems look similar on the surface — both confirm ownership and land classification — but they're maintained separately, and searching under the wrong one just won't return anything.
A few takeaways from sorting this out:
- If your area has been reclassified as a town/urban survey zone, don't assume the old rural record still applies.
- Banks and legal processes will specifically ask for whichever document matches the current survey type, so it's worth confirming before submitting anything.
- It's a quick check — you can pull up your tslr extract online the same way you'd check any other land record, just with the town survey number instead of a village survey number.
Has anyone else dealt with a property that got reclassified like this? How did you figure out which record you actually needed?
