I’m hoping someone here has been through this and can offer some advice. Out of the blue, I got a notice in the mail regarding a past-due balance from Pioneer Carpet One. The thing is, I thought this was all taken care of years ago. The letter is pretty threatening, mentioning legal action and a summons if I don’t pay immediately. It’s making me really anxious.
I don’t even remember the exact terms of the financing I set up with them at the time of purchase. After reading through the notice, I’m questioning if this debt is even valid. I’m worried about a default judgment if I ignore it, but I also don't want to pay something I might not owe.
I found some info online about consumer rights in these situations, and it sounds like I have a right to ask for a debt validation letter to make sure they can legally collect this, but the wording in the notice is so official it's freaking me out.
Has anyone successfully dealt with this company on an old debt? Did you hire a lawyer, or were you able to negotiate a settlement or payment plan on your own? Any guidance on how to handle this without ruining my credit would be a lifesaver. Thanks for reading. I'm feeling pretty lost on what my first step should be.
